Government has decided to develop Ponnani under SWISS Challenge method (Ponnani Cargo- an upcoming Project)


The work for Ponnani cargo port has been started. Chennai-based construction agency, Malabar Ports Private Limited (MPPL) has received the clearance for the construction from the ministry of environment and forest. Chief Minister of Kerala Sri Oommen Chandy laid the foundation stone for the first phase of the project on Saturday 8 August 2015, which is expected to bring a multifaceted development in Malabar. The project will be undertaken in public-private partnership mode.
The first phase of the project is planned to be completed in three years said Rangarajan, director of Malabar Ports Pvt Ltd.  The government has leased out 29.5-acre land to Malabar Ports for 30 years. It was in 2012 that the state government of Kerala signed an agreement with Chennai-based MPPL for the construction of a port in Ponnani, which was a hub for trading with Arabs and Europeans in the early ages of British rule in Malabar.
